What this services offers

The Smoking Matters service offers smokers throughout Dumfries & Galloway assistance in stopping smoking. Meetings are held in Health and Community Centres across the region, including more remote and isolated communities. Clients are mainly seen in one-to-ones but the service also runs groups in Annan, Dumfries and Castle Douglas. Clients are usually seen 6 times over a 3-month period. An individual session will last up to 30 mins and a group session approximately one hour. Groups are run on a rolling basis so smokers can join the group at any stage. One-to-one and group sessions are relaxed and informal with support from trained stop smoking advisors. Advisers support smokers during and after their quit attempt and will give advice on the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and other stop smoking products such as Champix and Zyban. At the time when you are ready to stop smoking, Advisors can provide you with a prescription for Nicotine Replacement Therapy prescription or make a recommendation to use Zyban or Champix to your GP.

Appointment times are morning, afternoon and evening. If a specific time of day is needed please make this request at the initial referral. If a mobile phone number is available, the service can send a first appointment text reminder and can offer texting support thereafter from your Advisor.
