What this services offers

NHS Borders Quit4Good Service provides support in the community via specialist advisors offering group sessions in various locations in the Borders including: Eyemouth, Jedburgh, Hawick, Walkerburn, Peebles, Duns, Galashiels, Kelso Innerleithen and Selkirk. Following an initial individual assessment, clients are invited to attend a six week group programme or a one to one session as appropriate to the client. One-to-one appointments are also available from all GP practices through the Practice nurse (except Teviot Medical Practice in Hawick). Group support sessions are available at a variety of locations, and are provided by experienced stop smoking advisors who have been specially trained in helping smokers to stop successfully. These typically take place for 1 hour each week over a course of 6 weeks. There is also a rolling group in Hawick and drop-in's in Innerleithen and Selkirk. Your advisor will give you advice on how to stop smoking, and will discuss nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and other stop smoking products with you. If appropriate, your advisors will give you a form to take to your GP or pharmacist, requesting the product of your choice (normal prescription charges or exemptions apply). The groups are relaxed, informal and friendly, and the support and encouragement you get from the advisors and the other quitters in the group means that you are much more likely to stop smoking than going it alone. One-to-one support can also be provided where group support is not a feasible option, such as housebound clients or those for whom English is not a first language or in smaller communities. One-to-one support is also available for young people and pregnant women at convenient venues.
