NHS Dumfries & Galloway Smoking Matters Service
Details
Individual and group support sessions
There are approximately 30 Stop Smoking clinics held throughout Dumfries & Galloway offering motivational one-to-one support and information about products like nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). They are run by experienced advisers who have been specially trained in helping smokers to quit successfully. Typically, you will see your advisor around six times over a 12-week period. Group support is also available as required in Dumfries, Annan and Stranraer, facilitated by stop smoking advisors in informal, friendly sessions.
The support and encouragement you get from your advisor (and if attending a group support session, other quitters in the group) means that you are much more likely to stop smoking than going it alone.
Pregnancy services
The Born 2 Quit Project has been specially developed to provide one-to-one stop smoking support for pregnant women. Call free on 0845 602 6861 to be put in touch with a specialist advisor or midwife trained in smoking cessation.
Young people's services
Specific support for young people under 18 is also available through the Want 2 Quit Project. Peer support groups may be organised in your school, otherwise call free on 0845 602 6861 for information about your nearest service.
Hospital-based support
At Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and Dumfries & Galloway Community Hospital, Stranraer, medical and nursing staff can refer patients who want to stop to the hospitals' dedicated smoking cessation advisor.
