About us and the stop smoking campaign

Health Scotland is part of NHS Scotland. In order to help people who are quitting smoking and improve the nation’s health, we work with national and local government, other health services, charities and businesses.

A large part of our job is looking at all the information available to really understand why Scotland's health is the way it is. Then we use this knowledge to find the best way to make things better.

This might be by:

  • Running stop smoking advertising campaigns
  • Producing advice leaflets on stopping smoking
  • Providing guidelines for health service workers to help patients in quitting smoking

Whatever approach we adopt, we check if it's making a difference, and learn from the experience.

We particularly want to make sure that everyone gets the same quality of service, wherever they live and whoever they are, should they need help quitting smoking.

Smoking is a big concern. It's one of the reasons Scotland is known as the 'sick man of Europe'. We've run special projects like schemes to help young smokers quit and a TV advertising campaign showing how second-hand smoke can affect people.

We produce brochures and leaflets in different languages. We've also carried out research and contributed to government policy on smoking.
